Getting specific

Tuesdays critical journal workshop was somewhat of a no brainer for me. I knew this was going to be the approach I was going to take for my dissertation, simply because I love making things. If someone was offering to let me write about the things I made in a reflective and critical way, intstead of another person's work or sayings, I would gladly take it. After 2 years in Lasalle, I've realised how useful it is to write and reflect on your work. i could see myself using this approach to inform my design decisions and process while making my prototypes. The workshop by gideon gave me a clearer idea of what kind of writing was expected of us in our critical journal. It left me excited about what was to come.

I had started to read or rather listen to an audiobook version of Mikael Wibergs- the materiality of interaction. A few pages in, I realised that although it covered a lot of interesting concepts about how user interfaces are built, I felt like the content was a bit irrelevant to what i was looking for. I was expecting more about interactivity rather than traditional interfaces. I made a mental note to be more specific and look for better readings that would be more useful for my research. Reflecting on the feedback for my presentation, that's what I was supposed to be doing anyway- GET MORE SPECIFIC.

What exactly in the broad spectrum of Human computer interaction was I interested in and what do I want my first pillar of research to be about is something I have started to think of. Projects that question and explore different ways of interacting/collaborating or communicating with machines have always intrigued me, say for example some of the case studies that I had picked for my presentation:

maybe this was something i wanted to explore- human machine interaction/communication through gestures. specifically hand gestures. That seems more specific, but I still had to think about what my third pillar would be. Looking at the examples andreas shared in class, I realised that it would make sense to have 1 pillar as something conceptual, another one more technical and the third one something that would help me actualise my final outcome.
